In Oklahoma City beslissen de Thunder en de Spurs wie er naar de NBA Finals gaat. De tegenstander staat al vast: de New York Knicks wachten. Nu gaat het er alleen nog om wie er tegenover hen staat.
Deze Western Conference Finals begon dicht. Game 1 ging in dubbele verlenging naar de Spurs, in Oklahoma City. Game 2 naar OKC, negen punten verschil. Maar daarna kantelde het karakter van de serie volledig. Games 3 tot en met 6 waren allemaal blowouts, telkens gewonnen door een andere ploeg. Alsof beide teams pas echt wakker worden als hun seizoen op het spel staat.
OKC won Game 5 overtuigend op eigen terrein. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was dominant met 32 punten en 9 assists, terwijl Cason Wallace en Isaiah Hartenstein Victor Wembanyama fysiek onder druk zetten. De Spurs misten hun driepointers en kwamen er verdedigend niet aan te pas.
Twee dagen later was het alsof er een andere ploeg op het veld stond.
In Game 6 deed Wembanyama wat grote spelers doen op het moment dat het telt. Hij begon met twee snelle driepointers, zette meteen de toon en eindigde met 28 punten, 10 rebounds en 3 blocks. Een antwoord op de fysieke aanpak van OKC, maar dan via een andere route: van buiten in plaats van in de verf.
Dylan Harper, de rookie die steeds meer zijn stempel drukt op deze serie, voegde 17 punten toe van de bank. Stephon Castle en Devin Vassell brachten energie aan beide kanten van het veld. En in het derde kwart liep het volledig uit de hand.
De Spurs gingen op een 20-0 run. OKC had bijna 7,5 minuut geen enkel punt gescoord en miste 13 schoten op rij. Het eindresultaat was 118-91. Een dominante overwinning die de serie gelijktrok op 3-3.
Er was nog iets opvallends aan Game 6. In vergelijking met Game 5 werden er opvallend minder free throws gegeven, OKC kreeg slechts 12 pogingen. Toeval of patroon? Dat is moeilijk te zeggen. Maar het viel genoeg mensen op om er na afloop over te praten. In een Game 7 kunnen dat soort details het verschil maken.
Voor OKC is de inzet helder: een tweede opeenvolgend Finals-optreden. Dat lukte Golden State voor het laatst in 2019. De Thunder zijn de regerend kampioen en spelen thuis. Dat telt.
San Antonio heeft in deze serie al bewezen dat ze het ook op de weg kunnen. Game 1 wonnen ze al in dubbele verlenging in Oklahoma City. Als ze met dezelfde agressiviteit spelen als in Game 6 en de turnovers beperkt houden, is er geen reden waarom ze het niet opnieuw kunnen.
Jalen Williams is out met een hamstringblessure. Dat is een aderlating voor OKC, al heeft de ploeg de hele serie laten zien dat ze de diepte hebben om dat op te vangen.

Dylan Harper, the rookie who is increasingly leaving his mark on this series, added 17 points off the bench. Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell brought energy on both ends of the floor. And in the third quarter, it completely fell apart for Oklahoma City.

There was something else notable about Game 6. Compared to Game 5, noticeably fewer free throws were called — OKC was sent to the line just 12 times. Coincidence or pattern? Hard to say. But it was noticeable enough to spark conversation afterwards. In a Game 7, those kinds of details can make the difference.
For OKC the objective is clear: a second consecutive Finals appearance. Golden State last managed that in 2019. The Thunder are the reigning champions and are playing at home. That counts for something.
San Antonio has already shown in this series that they can get it done on the road. They won Game 1 in double overtime in Oklahoma City. If they play with the same aggression as in Game 6 and keep turnovers low, there is no reason they cannot do it again.
Jalen Williams is out with a hamstring injury. A blow for OKC, though the team has shown throughout this series that they have the depth to absorb it.
