Voor de play-offs dit NFL-seizoen viel me meteen iets op: er was geen duidelijke favoriet. Niet omdat er geen sterke teams waren, maar omdat geen enkel team echt boven de rest uitstak. Dat maakte de play-offs spannend en gaf veel ploegen een echte kans.
Toen ik in februari mijn analyse schreef, leek de Seattle Seahawks de logische koploper, vooral vanwege hun indrukwekkende defense.
De Denver Broncos en de Houston Texans waren ook moeilijk te kloppen, terwijl teams zoals de New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers en Los Angeles Rams juist vooral met hun aanval gevaarlijk waren. De Buffalo Bills met Josh Allen en de regerend kampioen Philadelphia Eagles bleven constant een factor, terwijl outsiders zoals de Chicago Bears en de Jaguars indruk maakten.
Een aantal duels sprong eruit: de 49ers tegen de Seahawks, Patriots tegen de Texans, de underdog Bills tegen de Broncos en de Rams tegen de Bears. Twee aanvallende teams in mogelijk de koudste omstandigheden van het seizoen, puur spektakel.
Het moment dat bij mij het meest is blijven hangen, was de vierde-en-vier touchdown naar Cole Kmet in de laatste 30 seconden. Het seizoen stond op het spel en de pass was perfect.
Het duel tussen de Rams en Seahawks was een van de meest indrukwekkende matchups van het seizoen. Persoonlijk had ik gewild dat dit de Super Bowl was: statistisch gezien waren dit twee van de meest efficiënte teams die ik ooit in één seizoen heb gezien.
Achteraf laat dit seizoen zien dat één seizoen alles kan veranderen. Als je het goed aanpakt in de free agency en tijdens de draft, kunnen zomaar alle puzzelstukjes op hun plek vallen. Teams zoals de Jaguars, Patriots en Bears gingen van de laatste plekken naar echte contenders.
Wat er nodig is om kampioen te worden? Een gemiddeld tot goede aanval, explosieve special teams en een verschroeiende, verstikkende defensie zoals die van de Seattle Seahawks.

What does it take to win a championship? A solid offense, explosive special teams, and a suffocating defense like the Seattle Seahawks.
