Alsof dat het vuurtje nog niet genoeg aanwakkerde tussen deze twee ploegen, kreeg hij het ook nog eens aan de stok met Nikola Jokic nadat hij een lay-up maakte terwijl de wedstrijd al gespeeld was. Een ongeschreven regel in de NBA stelt dat je, wanneer je ruim voorstaat in de laatste 30 seconden, niet meer scoort, zeker niet als de tegenstander ook niet meer verdedigt en verwacht dat je de tijd netjes uitdribbelt.
Aan die regels heeft McDaniels maling, waardoor de drievoudig MVP op hem afstormde en hem een duw gaf. Dat zorgde ervoor dat spelers van beide teams zich ermee gingen bemoeien. Het vat de intensiteit van de playoffs goed samen: irritaties, opstootjes en alles doen om in het hoofd van je tegenstander te kruipen. Soms sta je wel zeven keer tegenover elkaar in twee weken tijd. Alles om te winnen.
De strijd tussen de Minnesota Timberwolves en de Denver Nuggets was op voorhand al een serie waar velen naar uitkeken. Tot nu toe maakt die alle verwachtingen waar, behalve voor de fans van de Nuggets. Zij kijken met hun ploeg tegen een 3-1 achterstand aan, nadat ze nog met 1-0 voorstonden. Voor het eerst kun je misschien stellen dat Jokic in een direct duel met zijn tegenstander Rudy Gobert wordt verslagen. Mede door de ijzersterke verdediging van Gobert schiet de Serviër in de laatste drie wedstrijden respectievelijk 8 uit 22, 7 uit 26 en 8 uit 20 uit het veld.
De ploeg uit de Mile High City is echter niet helemaal kansloos. Sterspelers Anthony Edwards, enkele weken uitgeschakeld, en Donte DiVincenzo, tot 2027 uit de roulatie, doen niet mee, al maakte dat in het laatste duel weinig uit. Toen stond Ayo Dosunmu, deze winter overgekomen van de Chicago Bulls, uit het niets op met 43 punten.
En zo zijn er wel meer onverwachte spelers die opstaan. Wat te denken van Jamison Battle, forward van de Toronto Raptors. In de eerste twee wedstrijden speelde hij in totaal slechts drie minuten, om in de derde wedstrijd ineens 14 punten te maken in 16 minuten speeltijd. Mede door zijn onverwachte uitbarsting trokken de Raptors de stand gelijk, 2-2.
Ook in andere series zien we verrassingen. De serie tussen de New York Knicks en de Atlanta Hawks staat 2-2 gelijk, met een onverwachte uitblinker in C.J. McCollum.
Een andere serie waarin nog enige spanning zit, is die tussen de Orlando Magic en de Detroit Pistons. De Magic leidt met 2-1 en vanavond krijgt het team van Cade Cunningham de kans op revanche.
Waar het nog spannend kan worden, is de serie tussen de Boston Celtics en de Philadelphia 76ers. De Celtics staan weliswaar 3-1 voor, maar de Sixers hebben Joel Embiid terug. Of hij voldoende wedstrijdritme heeft om de serie nog spannend te maken, is de vraag.
Van spanning is inmiddels geen sprake meer in de series van de San Antonio Spurs en de Oklahoma City Thunder. Ook de Los Angeles Lakers lijken, verrassend genoeg zonder Austin Reaves en Luka Doncic, de serie tegen de Houston Rockets naar zich toe te trekken.

As if that wasn't enough to stoke the fire between these two teams, he then got into it with Nikola Jokic after scoring a lay-up with the game already decided. An unwritten rule in the NBA holds that when you're up big in the final 30 seconds, you don't score, especially when the opponent has stopped defending and expects you to simply run out the clock.
McDaniels ignored that rule entirely. The three-time MVP came charging at him and shoved him, which led to players from both benches getting involved. It perfectly captures playoff intensity: frustrations, scuffles, and doing everything possible to get inside your opponent's head. Sometimes you face the same team seven times in two weeks. Whatever it takes to win.

The team from the Mile High City isn't completely out of it though. Star players Anthony Edwards, sidelined for several weeks, and Donte DiVincenzo, out until 2027, are unavailable, though that mattered little in the most recent game, when Ayo Dosunmu, acquired from the Chicago Bulls this winter, came out of nowhere to drop 43 points.
He's not alone. Consider Jamison Battle, forward for the Toronto Raptors. He played a combined three minutes across the first two games, then suddenly erupted for 14 points in 16 minutes in game three. His unexpected contribution helped the Raptors level the series at 2-2.
Similar surprises are emerging elsewhere. The New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks series is also tied 2-2, with C.J. McCollum emerging as an unlikely standout.
Another series with some life left is Orlando Magic versus Detroit Pistons. The Magic lead 2-1, and tonight Cade Cunningham's team gets the chance to even things up.
There's still potential drama in the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers matchup. The Celtics lead 3-1, but the Sixers have Joel Embiid back. Whether he has enough match sharpness to make the series interesting again remains to be seen.
Any remaining suspense has drained out of the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder series. And the Los Angeles Lakers, surprisingly without both Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic, appear to be taking control against the Houston Rockets.
