Trades. Free agency. En vooral de NBA Draft van 2026. Voor veel franchises draait het al weken niet meer om winnen, maar om de toekomst opbouwen. En in de NBA betekent dat vaak hetzelfde: verliezen. Of beter gezegd, tanken. Hoe slechter je seizoen, hoe groter je kans op een hoge draftpick. Zeker in een draftjaar als dit, waarin meerdere spelers worden gezien als potentiële supersterren, kan één slecht seizoen ineens de basis worden voor jarenlang succes.
Het seizoen 2025-26 liet een opvallende statistiek zien: een recordaantal van acht teams eindigde met 55 of meer verlies. Dat onderstreept de groeiende kloof tussen titelkandidaten en ploegen in rebuild. Teams als de Washington Wizards, Indiana Pacers en Brooklyn Nets bungelden onderaan het klassement. Voor ploegen als de Utah Jazz en Memphis Grizzlies stond het seizoen in het teken van jeugdontwikkeling, blessures en rosterwijzigingen.
De grote winnaar van de lottery waren uiteindelijk de Washington Wizards. Zij kregen de nummer één pick in handen, ondanks dat ze 14 procent kans hadden op de eerste keuze. Maar dat klinkt lager dan het eigenlijk is: 14 procent is momenteel simpelweg het hoogste percentage dat een ploeg kan hebben in de NBA Draft Lottery.
De NBA Draft Lottery bepaalt ieder jaar de volgorde van de eerste vier picks van de draft. Alleen teams die de playoffs missen doen mee, veertien ploegen in totaal. Na 2019 veranderde de NBA de kansen: de drie slechtste teams krijgen elk een gelijke kans van 14 procent op de eerste pick. Sinds die wijziging worden er ook vier posities via de lottery bepaald in plaats van drie.
Het systeem werkt met duizend mogelijke combinaties van pingpongballen. Iedere ploeg krijgt een aantal combinaties toegewezen op basis van hun record. Hoe slechter je record, hoe meer combinaties jij hebt en dus hoe groter de kans. Na de top vier gaat de rest van de eerste ronde in omgekeerde volgorde van het reguliere seizoensrecord. Als een pick via een trade van eigenaar is gewisseld, geldt het record van het oorspronkelijke team.
Dallas had slechts 1,8 procent kans op de eerste keuze, maar won in 2025 toch de lottery. Slechte teams krijgen een grotere kans, maar expres verliezen garandeert je nooit de eerste pick.
De Indiana Pacers zijn misschien wel het perfecte voorbeeld van hoe hard de lottery kan zijn. Indiana won dit seizoen slechts negentien wedstrijden. Een compleet verloren jaar, duidelijk gebouwd rondom tanken en draftpositie.
Alleen kwam de beloning nooit. Sterker nog, het werd pijnlijker door een eerdere trade. De Pacers stuurden center Ivica Zubac naar de LA Clippers voor Bennedict Mathurin en draftcompensatie. De condities van die voorwaardelijke eerste-ronde pick in 2026 waren zo dat als de pick buiten de top vier zou vallen, hij eigendom van de Clippers zou worden. Dat is precies wat er is gebeurd: de Clippers eindigen met de vijfde pick. Daardoor bleek de pick die Indiana had weggegeven uiteindelijk waardevoller dan hun eigen keuze na een seizoen met negentien overwinningen. Dat is het gevaar van tanken in de NBA. Je vergroot je kansen, maar volledige controle heb je nooit.
Wat deze draft vooral anders maakt dan andere jaren, is de hoeveelheid elite talent aan de absolute top. Normaal gesproken heb je één, misschien twee spelers die serieus kans maken op de eerste pick. Dit jaar zijn dat er vier. Misschien zelfs meer. Scouts geloven zelfs dat de top tien van deze draft voor het grootste deel uit freshmen kan bestaan. Met een beetje geluk praten we over zeven of acht eerstejaars college spelers in de top tien. Dat gebeurt bijna nooit.
Maar daarachter houdt het niet op. Namen als Darius Acuff Jr., Nate Ament, Tounde Yessoufou en Koa Peat blijven stijgen op vrijwel ieder draftboard. In sommige jaren hoop je met een top pick op een goede starter. In 2026 hopen teams een toekomstige superster te vinden.

Dallas held just a 1.8 percent chance at the first pick, yet won the 2025 lottery anyway. Bad teams get better odds, but deliberately losing never guarantees you the top selection.
The Indiana Pacers may be the perfect illustration of how brutal the lottery can be. Indiana won just nineteen games this season, a completely lost year clearly constructed around tanking and draft positioning.
But the reward never came. Worse, an earlier trade made things even more painful. The Pacers sent center Ivica Zubac to the LA Clippers in exchange for Bennedict Mathurin and draft compensation. The terms on the conditional first-round pick in 2026 meant that if the pick landed outside the top four, it would become the Clippers' property. That is exactly what happened: the Clippers end up with the fifth pick. The pick Indiana gave away turned out to be more valuable than their own selection after a nineteen-win season. That is the risk of tanking in the NBA. You improve your odds, but you never have full control.
