De NBA Play-in Tournament: de perfecte prelude
Als de eerste vier wedstrijden een voorbode zijn van wat we de komende maanden kunnen verwachten, dan kan menig basketballiefhebber zijn of haar geluk niet op. Vier wedstrijden achter de rug en vanavond nog eens twee, alleen al om überhaupt de play-offs te halen.
Alsof 82 wedstrijden in het reguliere seizoen en de play-offs nog niet genoeg waren, besloot NBA-commissaris Adam Silver doodleuk nog een extra laag toe te voegen aan het toch al volle schema. Wat tijdens het COVID-seizoen in 2020, in de zogeheten bubble in Orlando, begon als een experiment, groeide in 2021 uit tot een vast en inmiddels onmisbaar onderdeel van het seizoen.
Voorheen plaatsten de nummers 1 tot en met 8 van elke conference zich direct voor de postseason. De nummer 1 speelde tegen 8, 2 tegen 7, 3 tegen 6 en 4 tegen 5. Een serie werd beslist in een best of seven. Bij een 3-3 stand volgde game 7, misschien wel het mooiste wat basketbal te bieden heeft.
Hoe werkt het nu?
Dit jaar stonden de volgende vier wedstrijden op het programma:
Miami Heat tegen Charlotte Hornets
Orlando Magic tegen Philadelphia 76ers
Golden State Warriors tegen Los Angeles Clippers
Portland Trail Blazers tegen Phoenix Suns

Als het doel van deze wedstrijden spektakel was, dan is dat meer dan geslaagd. Stuk voor stuk waren het wedstrijden die tot het einde spannend bleven. Het verschil van twaalf punten, in het voordeel van de Sixers tegen Orlando, was nog het grootste verschil van de avond.
Wat volgde was precies wat je hoopt te zien. Ongekende spanning, technical fouls, kleine opstootjes, waanzinnige shots en zelfs overtime. Aan alles was te merken dat de vrijblijvendheid van het reguliere seizoen plaats heeft gemaakt voor pure urgentie.
De clash tussen Stephen Curry en Kawhi Leonard was genieten, maar de wedstrijd tussen de Miami Heat en de Charlotte Hornets spande voor mij de kroon. Driepunters, clutch plays, een gamewinner en overtime, alles zat erin.
Vanavond staan de laatste twee wedstrijden op het programma. Orlando ontvangt Charlotte, terwijl Golden State op bezoek gaat bij Phoenix. De laatste tickets worden verdeeld, waarna het echte werk begint. En dat is misschien wel het mooiste aan dit alles: dit voelt nog maar als het begin.

If the first four games are any indication of what we can expect in the coming months, basketball fans are in for something special. Four games down, with two more to go tonight, just to even make the playoffs.
As if 82 regular season games and the playoffs weren't enough, NBA commissioner Adam Silver casually added another layer to an already packed schedule. What started as an experiment during the 2020 COVID season in the Orlando bubble has, since 2021, grown into a permanent and now indispensable part of the NBA calendar.
Previously, the top eight teams in each conference would qualify directly for the postseason. The number one seed faced the eighth, two played seven, three played six, and four played five. Each series was decided in a best-of-seven format. If it came down to 3-3, Game 7 followed.
So how does it work now?
This year, the following four matchups were on the schedule:

If the goal of these games was pure spectacle, it has more than delivered. Every single game went down to the wire. The twelve-point margin in favour of the Sixers against Orlando was the largest gap of the night.
What followed was exactly what you hope for. Intense moments, technical fouls, small scuffles, incredible shot-making and even overtime. It was clear that the looseness of the regular season had been replaced by real urgency.
The clash between Stephen Curry and Kawhi Leonard was a joy to watch, but for me, the game between the Miami Heat and the Charlotte Hornets stood above the rest. Three-pointers, clutch plays, a game-winner, and overtime, it had everything.
Tonight, the final two games will be played. Orlando hosts Charlotte, while Golden State travels to Phoenix. The last tickets will be claimed, and then the real battle begins. And maybe that's what makes this so compelling, it still feels like just the beginning.
