Als basketballiefhebber moet je diep, heel diep graven in het geheugen om een spectaculairdere playoff-game te vinden dan Game 1 tussen de Oklahoma City Thunder en de San Antonio Spurs.
41 punten, 24 rebounds, clutch threes en blocks. Victor Wembanyama deed het allemaal om de Spurs in dubbele overtime naar de overwinning te leiden en meteen home court advantage te pakken.
Alsof dat nog niet genoeg was, kende ook de serie tussen de New York Knicks en Cleveland Cavaliers een overtime-thriller. Een historische comeback in de laatste 7 minuten, waarin de Knicks een 20 punten achterstand goedmaakten tegen de Cavaliers, zorgde ervoor dat New York uiteindelijk de winst wist te "stelen".
Game 1 was een wedstrijd voor de geschiedenisboeken. Het ging op en neer, spectaculaire plays volgden elkaar constant op en reguliere speeltijd was niet genoeg om een winnaar aan te wijzen. Niet één, maar twee overtimes waren nodig om de Spurs uiteindelijk als winnaar uit de bus te laten komen.
In de NBA speel je net zo lang door tot er een winnaar is, geen verlenging met regels of beperkingen, gewoon overtimes tot iemand instort. En in Game 1 waren dat uiteindelijk de Spurs.
OKC moest zich in Game 2 zien te herpakken, en dat lukte, al ging dat niet vanzelf. Over de eerste twee wedstrijden vielen de volgende dingen op:

Daar stond één man centraal: Jalen Brunson, die met 38 punten de wedstrijd volledig overnam in het vierde kwart en de overtime.
Zijn aanpak was duidelijk: de mismatch opzoeken met James Harden, die defensief niet zijn sterkste kant heeft.
