De NFL Draft 2026 staat voor de deur. Deze week begint het evenement in Pittsburgh. Na de drukte van de free agency is dit hét moment voor teams om hun toekomst verder vorm te geven, en voor de spelers zelf het moment dat hun leven verandert. Waar spelers uit de NBA Draft nog weleens uit de EuroLeague of de rest van de wereld komen, zijn NFL-spelers vrijwel altijd afkomstig uit het Amerikaanse collegesysteem, waar ze soms al jaren op hoog niveau spelen voor publieksaantallen die in Nederland ondenkbaar zijn: de wedstrijd tussen Michigan en Notre Dame trok in 2013 ruim 115.000 toeschouwers, tegenover de bijna 60.000 die in de Johan Cruijff ArenA passen.
Teams verzamelen data via de NFL Combine (snelheid, kracht, explosiviteit) en interviews, op zoek naar zowel talent als mentaliteit. Daarnaast spelen trades een grote rol: teams ruilen picks om omhoog te gaan voor een specifieke speler, of juist om meer picks te verzamelen. Spelers op een rookie-contract zijn relatief goedkoop, wat de Draft de belangrijkste manier maakt voor teams om hun basis te bouwen. Een goede draft kan een team jarenlang succes geven, een slechte kan een franchise jaren terugzetten.

De Giants bouwden daarna door met offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa, cornerback Colton Hood en wide receiver Malachi Fields, wat hun draft tot een van de sterkste van het weekend maakt. Rueben Bain Jr. (Miami), door sommigen als top-3 pick gezien, moest wachten tot pick 15, waar de Tampa Bay Buccaneers hem met open armen ontvingen.
Quarterback Ty Simpson (Alabama) ging verrassend vroeg op pick 13 naar de Los Angeles Rams, terwijl Garrett Nussmeier (LSU), die vooraf als vergelijkbare keuze werd gezien, pas op pick 249 viel. C.J. Allen, Emmanuel McNeil-Warren en Jermod McCoy moesten eveneens langer wachten dan verwacht.

Buiten de grote namen viel er ook bij de rest van de competitie genoeg te ontdekken. De Carolina Panthers kozen voor pure size en power met Monroe Freeling, Lee Hunter en Chris Brazzell II: geen finesse-draft, maar een statement dat deze roster fysiek wil domineren vanaf de line of scrimmage.
De Cincinnati Bengals bouwden voort op hun eerdere trade voor Dexter Lawrence II door extra snelheid en lengte toe te voegen aan de defense met Cashius Howell en Tacario Davis. De Chicago Bears pakten met safety Dillon Thieneman op pick 25 een opvallende steal, een speler die door velen veel hoger werd verwacht.
De Houston Texans bleven trouw aan hun fysieke identiteit met Keylan Rutledge, Kayden McDonald en Marlin Klein. Rutledge vatte het na zijn selectie treffend samen: "finish the guy in the dirt." Free agency bracht direct volop beweging: de Buffalo Bills versterkten hun aanval met wide receiver DJ Moore, de Kansas City Chiefs met running back en Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III, en de Las Vegas Raiders met center Tyler Linderbaum, de perfecte aanwinst om een nieuwe eerstejaars quarterback beter te beschermen.
Jaelan Phillips tekende een megacontract bij de Carolina Panthers, en Trey Hendrickson belandde uiteindelijk bij de Baltimore Ravens en dus niet bij Maxx Crosby, zoals eerder nog werd gedacht. Het grootste nieuws kwam echter uit Cincinnati: de Bengals haalden defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II over van de New York Giants in ruil voor hun eerste-ronde pick in de Draft van 2026, en verlengden meteen zijn contract tot en met 2028.
