Dit is voor de spelers zelf die uitgekozen kunnen worden het moment dat hun leven verandert. Maar hoe werkt de NFL Draft precies, en waarom is het zo'n groot moment in American football?
Wat is de NFL Draft en hoe werkt het?
De NFL Draft is het jaarlijkse evenement waarbij alle 32 teams spelers kiezen uit college football. Zoals eerder vermeld is een draft pick in feite een keuzebeurt. Teams kiezen in een vaste volgorde en die volgorde is vaak gebaseerd op hoe slecht of goed ze het vorige seizoen waren. Er zijn in totaal 7 rondes en meer dan 250 spelers worden gekozen.
Waar spelers uit de NBA Draft nog weleens uit de EuroLeague of de rest van de wereld komen, zijn de spelers uit de NFL Draft vrijwel alleen afkomstig uit het Amerikaanse collegesysteem. Daar spelen ze soms al jaren op hoog niveau.
Probeer je het voor te stellen: hogescholen en universiteiten hebben elk een apart voetbalteam, basketbalteam, volleybalteam en ga zo maar door. Het voetbalteam van TU Delft tegen de Universiteit van Twente in een compleet eigen voetbalstadion met een capaciteit van meer dan 100.000 bezoekers. Het is bijna niet voor te stellen, tenzij je in de Verenigde Staten woont. Zo speelden de American football-ploegen van de universiteiten van Michigan en Notre Dame in 2013 tegen elkaar voor een bijna recordaantal van 115.109 toeschouwers. Even een korte vergelijking: in de Johan Cruijff ArenA passen nog geen 60.000 bezoekers.
Toch hebben teams meer data nodig dan alleen de wedstrijden tussen de universiteiten. Ze willen alles weten over een speler: hoe snel hij is, hoe sterk hij is, hoe hij reageert onder druk en wat voor persoon hij is. Daarom is de NFL Combine zo belangrijk. Hier worden spelers getest op snelheid, kracht en explosiviteit. Maar de interviews zijn minstens zo belangrijk. Teams zoeken niet alleen talent, maar ook mentaliteit.
Welke soorten spelers worden gedraft?

Een van de belangrijkste onderdelen van de NFL Draft zijn trades. Teams kunnen hun picks ruilen. Soms omdat ze omhoog willen voor één specifieke speler. Soms omdat ze juist meer picks willen verzamelen.
Dit betekent dat de volgorde constant kan veranderen. Een team dat op plek 20 staat, kan ineens naar plek 5 gaan. Of in het geval van de Cincinnati Bengals kun je je pick ook compleet weggeven voor spelers als Dexter Lawrence.
Wat gebeurt er tijdens de draft zelf?
Tijdens de draft is elk team om de beurt aan zet. Ze hebben een beperkte tijd om een keuze te maken. In die tijd wordt er overlegd, worden er telefoontjes gepleegd en worden er last-minute beslissingen genomen.
En dan komt het moment. De keuze wordt ingestuurd. De naam wordt bekendgemaakt.
