De confetti was nog maar net opgeruimd na Super Bowl LX, waarin de Seattle Seahawks de New England Patriots versloegen, of de NFL draaide alweer door naar de offseason. Voor veel fans een rustige periode, maar achter de schermen begint juist het echte spel van contracten, trades en rosterbuilding.

In een eerder artikel zoomde ik al in op de offseason, maar na wat nieuwe trades en met de NFL Draft later deze week in aantocht, blijft het altijd interessant om er nog eens in te duiken.

Free agency bracht direct volop beweging. De Buffalo Bills versterkten hun aanval met wide receiver DJ Moore, de Kansas City Chiefs met running back en Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III en de Las Vegas Raiders met center Tyler Linderbaum. De perfecte aanwinst om bijvoorbeeld een nieuwe eerstejaars quarterback beter te beschermen tegen aanstormende verdedigers.

Een van die sterke verdedigers kan Jaelan Phillips zijn, die een megacontract tekende bij de Carolina Panthers, of een van de vier nieuwkomers bij de New York Jets. Trey Hendrickson belandde uiteindelijk bij de Baltimore Ravens en dus niet Maxx Crosby, zoals eerder nog werd gedacht. Dit weekend was er ook nieuws uit Cincinnati, waar de Bengals defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II overnamen van de New York Giants in ruil voor hun eerste-ronde pick in de Draft van 2026. Ze verlengden meteen zijn contract tot en met het seizoen 2028.

Dat de Bengals hun defensie versterkten via deze trade en hun nummer 10-pick opgaven voor dit jaar, heeft volgens insiders te maken met het feit dat de draft van deze week niet bepaald de allersterkste draft is. De top-5 tot 7-spelers zijn goed, denk aan Arvell Reese, Fernando Mendoza, David Bailey, Jeremiyah Love, Rueben Bain of Caleb Downs, maar daarbuiten zijn er geen spelers die meteen de impact kunnen maken zoals Lawrence dat kan. En de Bengals willen nú winnen en niet nog een paar jaar wachten. Meer over de aankomende NFL Draft, later deze week.
